A customer used to type a few keywords into Google and scroll through ten results. More and more, they now ask a full question to ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, or Microsoft Copilot — and get back one written answer that names a few businesses. If yours isn't one of them, that customer may never see you.
AI search tools look things up on the web, then summarize what they find. They tend to recommend businesses whose websites are easy to read and clearly answer the question, whose details are consistent everywhere online, and that other trusted sites talk about. There's no secret file or tag that guarantees a mention — it's the fundamentals, done unusually well.
Each AI tool looks things up differently
"AI search" isn't one system. The big platforms each draw on a different search backbone, which is why a business can show up in one and not another.
| Platform | Where it gets current information | What that means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews & AI Mode | Google's own search index | Your pages must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search |
| ChatGPT search | Web searches it runs on your behalf | It may rewrite the question into several searches — cover the related questions too |
| Microsoft Copilot | Bing search results | Being healthy in Bing matters, not just Google |
Google has said plainly that there's no special schema, file, or application needed to appear in AI Overviews — a page simply has to be indexed and eligible to show in normal search. OpenAI says ChatGPT search may turn your question into one or more targeted searches. In other words: the classic foundations still decide who gets found.
What makes a business easy to recommend
1. Pages that answer real questions directly
AI tools pull short, self-contained passages. A page that answers "how much does this cost?" or "what's the difference between X and Y?" in its first few sentences is far easier to quote than a page of slogans.
2. A clear, consistent identity
Your name, services, locations, hours, and description should match across your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, directories, and social profiles. Conflicting details make it harder for any system to be confident about who you are.
3. Proof from other people
What others say about you carries more weight than what you say about yourself: genuine reviews, local press, industry associations, partner sites, interviews. You can't buy your way into these answers, but you can earn more mentions.
4. Something original
If your site repeats what a hundred others say, there's no reason to cite you. First-hand experience, your own data, clear comparisons, and expert explanations give AI tools a reason to use your page specifically.
5. A site machines can actually read
Important information should be in real text, not locked in images or slow scripts. Fast, indexable pages with clear headings and accurate structured data are table stakes.

What about ads inside AI answers?
ChatGPT and Google now offer advertising around AI answers, and it can be a useful channel to test. But paid placements are a separate system from organic answers — running ads doesn't make the AI recommend you more. Treat them as two different levers: earn the organic mention, and buy the ad where the numbers work.
How to measure it honestly
There's no official "AI ranking" score. AI answers also change from one run to the next. The honest approach is to track a fixed set of real customer questions over time and report trends, not single snapshots.
- Run the same set of customer questions monthly across ChatGPT, Google AI, Perplexity, and Copilot
- Record whether you're mentioned, whether your site is cited, and which competitors and sources appear
- Check Bing Webmaster Tools' AI performance reporting for Copilot citations
- Track visits from AI tools in Google Analytics, and connect them to calls, forms, and booked customers

Do I need special code or an 'AI file' to appear in AI search?
Not for Google's AI Overviews — Google says no special schema or file is required; the page just needs to be indexed and eligible for normal search. Accurate structured data still helps machines understand your business, but there's no single tag that guarantees a mention.
Is AI search optimization different from SEO?
It builds on SEO rather than replacing it. Google treats optimization for its AI features as part of SEO. The difference is emphasis: AI answers reward direct, quotable answers, a consistent business identity, and third-party proof even more than traditional rankings do.
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
You can buy ads in some AI products, but ads are separate from the organic answer. Paying for ads does not make the AI recommend you in its regular responses.
How long does it take to see results?
It varies by industry and starting point. Technical and content fixes can be done in weeks; earning reviews, mentions, and authority takes longer. That's why we track trends month over month instead of promising a date.
